Since the physical fiber optic cabling is expensive to implement for each and every service separately, its capacity expansion using a Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) is a necessity. WDM technology was developed to expand capacity of networks single fiber can provide. A WDM system uses a Multiplexer at the transmitter to combine several wavelengths together, each one carry different signal and a demultiplexer at the receiver to split them apart. Both Mux and Demux are passive, requiring no power supply.
Nowadays there are several kinds of standardized WDM in existence:
--General WDM, such as 980/1550 WDM, 1310/1550 WDM.
--CWDM include CWDM mux/demux module and CWDM OADM module. The common configuration of CWDM mux/demux module is 2CH, 4CH, 8CH, 16CH, 18CH CWDM mux/demux module. Single fiber or dual fiber connection for CWDM Mux/demux are available.
--DWDM include 50GHz, 100GHz, 200GHz DWDM mux/demux module and DWDM OADM module. The common configuration is 2CH, 4CH, 8CH, 16 CH, 32CH, 40CH channels.
